'Nobody cares' in the sense you wrote about is something I've realised only recently and it's actually a very freeing thought. We are all so wrapped up in our own worlds that we don't usually notice the minutiae of others' lives!

Thinking on the flip side of that too, I absolutely care about people but not in the way they choose to live their life.
